Children interview board member Daphne Bergman
With a kick-off sprint in the Heemtuin botanical garden on Wednesday, September 21, the project Beweeg in het Goudse Hout (Moving in the Goudse Hout) was launched. The sprint was put on by Daphne Bergman, a board member of the Reeuwijk Lakes Recreation Board and also an Alderwoman in Gouda, together with students from the Koningin Wilhelminaschool. Bergman was then thoroughly interviewed by the children from the talent class Move. The boys, girls, and the teacher eagerly waited to pose their questions to this important visitor. And Alderwoman Daphne Bergman actually arrived by bike.
WHO?
Who are you?
“I’m Daphne Bergman, a board member of this lovely nature and recreation area, and I am also an Alderwoman whose topic include construction and housing, culture, recreation. and tourism. I have had this job for one-and-a-half years now in Gouda.”
Who do you usually do sports with?
“To be quite honest with you, I don’t really do sports any more. I know that’s not really a good thing, but since I’ve had this job, there never seems to be enough time. Before that, I used to sometimes ride on the spinner, which is like a racing bike for indoors. It’s very fun, but I never get around to it any more.”
WHAT?
What sport(s) do you do?
“I used to play ice hockey quite intensively. That’s a really rough sport. But unfortunately I broke my ankle playing hockey, in four different places. So that’s all over now. Now the only time I do sports is when I go to work. I cycle everywhere, because I prefer being in the outside air. Look at just how beautifully we can do that here in Gouda!”
What does your job involve?
“I consider it my task to ensure that everything goes well in Gouda. Both in terms of how the town is organized, as well as everything having to do with culture. I try to pick up on what’s going on in the city. I also consult with other aldermen about how we can together make the city as nice and pleasant as possible. In addition, I am also accountable to the city council, and once every four years to the voters as well.”
What do you think about us coming here to the Goudse Hout?
“I think it’s great, because if you don’t move enough, you’ll become overweight. That’s not healthy. And moving is very good for your mind as well. If you learn to like moving at a young age, then maybe you’ll miss it later if you don’t keep on moving.”
What is your role in this project?
I’m here with you to festively launch this great initiative! I listen to what you find out, and to find out what you want from the Goudse Hout. Then I think about how we as a municipality can help realize those wishes.”
WHERE?
Where to you usually do sports?
“As I’ve already mentioned a little bit, I’m not so keen on being in the fitness club. I prefer the fresh air. I have a dog, and I walk a lot with him. And that’s also a kind of moving, right?”
Do you ever do sports in the Goudse Hout?
“I’m often here with my children, and then we walk for a while. Children usually don’t like walking, but we still have a good time with it. I’ve also gone inline skating here a few times.”
WHY?
Why do you think it’s important for children to do sports?
“Children learn from sports and exercise. “After all, we’ve known for a long time that school is more fun if you do sports or exercise.”
Why did you become an Alderwoman?
“I want to contribute to a pleasant living environment, and I prefer doing that by being close to the citizens. Sometimes it’s a tiring job, and sometimes it’s a very fun job. An event like this is one of the best parts of my work: the meetings with the residents of my city. I do that twice a week. And now I can also ask you: what do you think about the Goudse Hout?”
Bram replies:”Well, I think it’s pretty boring here. If there were a playground here, then I think that kids would come here more often. It might even be a playground that uses natural materials, like logs, but then at least you have a place to go to.”

WOW!
Do you think “This is How you Move!” is a fun activity?
“Yes, it’s a very good example of how you can make a city’s sport and exercise opportunities visible, and develop ideas based on that, in this case in the Goudse Hout.”
Did you enjoy this interview?
“It was great fun, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the ideas that you come up with. Keep me posted!”
Beweeg in het Goudse Hout is a project for children and parents in Gouda. All of the children in primary school are invited to come to the Goudse Hout and exchange their exercise stories, in part via this newspaper. In the process, children have a chance to win several prizes, such as a new pair of skates. For six weeks, a staff member who is involved in the project will be interviewed about their Who, What, Where and Wow! experiences.
With the pilot, the Reeuwijk Lakes and Recreation Board and Fysio Educatief are providing some good examples of exercise in a green environment. This project will run until the end of October 2011. Together, parents and children can talk about these subjects on Hyves: : beweeg-in-goudsehout.hyves.nl and Twitter: @beweeg_in_gh
